Import Contacts
Bring a spreadsheet of contacts into Statxt in four steps: upload, map columns, review, import. Duplicates, Do Not Contact (DNC) numbers and bad numbers are skipped for you, and you can drop everyone straight into a group.
How it works
- 1
Upload
Drop in a CSV or Excel file, or load a tab from a connected Google Sheet.
- 2
Map columns
Statxt suggests a field for each column. Check them and fix any it got wrong.
- 3
Review
See row counts, missing phones and the merge fields your file will support.
- 4
Import
Duplicates, DNC and invalid numbers are skipped. The summary shows every count.
STEP 01
Open Contacts → Import and add your file
Go to Contacts and click the Import tab. Drag your file onto the upload area, or click Choose File.
- CSV, XLS and XLSX files are supported. Large CSVs are processed in the background.
- Statxt shows the file name, size and how many rows it found. Click Continue.
- Not sure about the format? Click Download Template for a sample CSV.
- Connected Google in Settings → Integrations? You can pull a spreadsheet, pick a tab and click Load sheet instead.
STEP 02
Map your columns to contact fields
Statxt reads your column headers and a sample value, then suggests a field for each column. The percentage shows how confident the suggestion is.
- A column must be mapped to Phone Number, or the import won’t start.
- Map a single name column to Full Name. Statxt splits it into first and last name.
- Use Custom Field 1 or 2 for extra data, and Skip this column for anything you don’t need.
- Click Auto-Map Fields to run the suggestions again after you change things.
STEP 03
Choose import settings and a group
Below the mapping table, pick how Statxt should treat duplicates and opted-out numbers, and which group the new contacts go into.
- Skip Duplicates, Check DNC List and Skip same-name DNC siblings are on by default.
- Pick a group under Assign to Group, or type a name and click Create to make a new one.
- If a contact already exists, Statxt doesn’t create a copy. It still adds that contact to the group you picked.
- Send Welcome Message and Validate phone numbers after import are off unless you turn them on. Validation uses credits, and you see an estimate first.
STEP 04
Review the import and start it
The review screen sums up your file before anything is saved. Check the counts, then click Start Import.
- Rows With Phone and Missing Phone tell you how many rows can become contacts.
- Available Merge Fields shows the tokens, like {first_name}, these contacts will support in messages.
- Over 5,000 rows going into one group? Choose split option creates extra groups, numbered or with a base name you choose.
- Imports can’t be undone, so check the mapping summary first.
STEP 05
Read the import summary
When the import finishes, the summary shows exactly what happened to every row.
- Duplicates Skipped counts numbers already in your contacts and repeats inside the file.
- DNC Excluded and FND Excluded are numbers on your DNC list or in the Failed Number Directory, a list of numbers that failed delivery before.
- Invalid Records are rows with a missing or unusable phone number. Row errors are listed under the summary.
- Forgot to pick a group? Click Forgot to add to a group? to add this batch now.
Pro tips
Get more out of Import Contacts
Map a status column
Map a column to Subscription Status. Values like “unsubscribed”, “opt-out” or “stop” import those contacts as unsubscribed.
Groups/Tags makes tags
The Groups/Tags field turns comma-separated values into contact tags. To put contacts in a group, use Assign to Group.
Several numbers per contact
Map extra columns to Phone Number 2, Phone Number 3 or Alternate Phone. A cell with numbers separated by commas or semicolons works too.
Big lists, many groups
A group holds up to 5,000 contacts. Larger imports into one group are split into numbered groups, like “Spring Members 2026 2”.
Import while you build a blast
In Text Blaster, click Upload leads in the Recipients panel to run this same import without leaving the campaign.
Find the batch later
Click View Contacts after an import to see the group or batch you just added. You can also filter All Contacts by Import batch.
Common questions
What file types can I import?
CSV, XLS and XLSX files. If you’ve connected Google in Settings → Integrations, you can also load a tab from a Google Sheet.
What happens to contacts that already exist?
Statxt matches on phone number and never creates a second copy. If you picked a group, the existing contact is added to that group.
Are DNC and opted-out numbers imported?
Not with the default settings. Numbers on your DNC list and in the Failed Number Directory are excluded, and the summary shows how many.
Can I import more than 5,000 contacts into one group?
Yes. Groups hold up to 5,000 contacts, so Statxt asks how to name the extra groups and splits the list for you.
